Having graduated from a university nearly 4 years ago, this happens to be a topic that I am still very interested in because I can still relate to poor college students. The love of money is the root of all evil, however, money can make your life a lot easier! Especially as a student. I mean think about it, as a full-time university student, you spend every day up on campus going from class to class, lecture to lecture, studying, computer labs, library time, etc. Oh yah, and if you didn’t take high school to seriously, you’ve got to figure out a way to pay for rent, food, books, tuition, and a little bit of play money on the side. If you’re going to school to become an engineer or a doctor, well, you’re likely not going to have much of a social life for the next ten or so years haha. Actually this applies to everyone, college of science, art, engineering, business, and any others I’m forgetting. How do you pay for your monthly expenses and still keep a great GPA? There are quite a few things you can do really and unfortunately it’s not well known.
The main one I’m going to discuss is something called summer sales. Now wait, before you run away saying “I hate sales I could never do that!”, hear me out for a minute. There are a number of companies, especially concentrated in Utah for some reason, that recruit college students during the school year and hire them to sell in various parts of the country for 3-4 months during the summer. It can be a grind since it is mainly D2D (door to door) sales. Yikes. But did I mention the average sales people that do this make anywhere from $20,000-$30,000 a summer? In some parts of the country that’s not too far off from a teacher’s salary. That’s right, someone who went to a university, paid for tuition, suffered through all of those difficult classes, and now makes $25K-$35K per year. Per Year!!! And I’m telling you there are companies that will pay you that in a summer time. However, you have to sell. Typically these companies specialize in pest control, home security, and I’ve even seen a company that sells inexpensive garbage contracts…you know, the garbage truck that comes to your home every Thursday? Yep, apparently you can sell those services too.
We spend a good majority of our lives where? On our mattresses and at our jobs. Now I’m not going to discuss the merits of a tempurpedic mattress here, however, I hear they are amazing. We all spend 40+ hours a week at a job that we either love, hate, or tolerate. Doesn’t it just make sense for us to find that something that we enjoy and not only that, that something that brings fulfillment because we’re good at it?
I’ve heard some very successful people say don’t take a job just for the money. At the time I thought, yah, easy for YOU to say. You have all the money in the world…with each passing work week, I start to realize the wisdom of that statement. There are very wealthy people who are miserable and there are those who make an average income and love life. So can we have our cake and eat it too??? Why yes, we can.

Have you seen the recent job reports released to us from the government? Now not to delve into politics, but depending on the politician is in office it’s always “good news” this or “new jobs created” that. Now look at the real world, the job market is always as great as our politicians make it out to be. So what are we to do? Blame others for this? That might be a temporary fix, but in reality, we need to be better, become more educated, valuable, better trained, to be competitive in today’s economy. We have to do what’s right to find better employment. When we are properly employed our checking accounts are healthy, we are no longer slaves to debt or credit cards. We’re on the right track to freedom.
